Key West, Florida operates on its own unwritten island rules: the Hemingway Home ticket booth accepts strictly cash, the Dry Tortugas ferry books out four months ahead, and parking in an Old Town residential space carries a mandatory $100 fine. This guide starts with the free Duval Loop bus, shows you where the reef begins, and routes your days without wasted hours in ticket queues.
Key West has no general island admission fee, but major landmark admissions range from $17.50 to $25.00, and the Hemingway Home ticket window requires physical cash ($18.00). Three nights is the natural minimum for a first trip: one full day dedicated to the Dry Tortugas ferry excursion, one day exploring Old Town's museums and historic lanes on foot, and one day dedicated to water sports and an offshore barrier reef sunset sail.

The island is only four miles long by two miles wide, but its character divides sharply into six distinct areas. Here is the geography of your visit.
The dense historic core packed with 19th-century wooden architectural gems, shaded brick lanes, the Hemingway Home, and the active marina at the Historic Seaport. This is where you spend 80% of your daytime walking hours.
The northwestern harbor apron where hundreds gather each evening for the Sunset Celebration. Home to the Key West Aquarium, Shipwreck Museum, and the historic brick Custom House.
The 1.25-mile spine running from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. The lower end near Front Street is loud with legendary bars like Sloppy Joe's; the upper end near the Butterfly Conservatory is a tranquil gallery and cafe district.
A 54-acre state park occupying the southwestern tip of the island. Combines an authentic Civil War brick fortress with shaded picnic groves and the deepest, clearest snorkeling beach accessible without a boat.
The historic 16-block neighborhood settled in the early 1800s by Bahamian immigrants. Characterized by brightly painted shotgun cottages, roaming roosters, and famous open-air dining at Blue Heaven.
The shallow flats, mangrove keys, and sandbars north of the island within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Best explored on guided kayak eco-tours or jet ski island circumnavigations.
Key West looks like a conventional beach resort town on a map, but geographically and logistically it functions very differently. Three realities shape every successful trip:
1. Natural beaches are scarce, shallow, and rocky. Unlike Daytona or Clearwater, the Florida Keys are surrounded by an offshore barrier reef that absorbs ocean wave energy. Without heavy surf to grind coral into fine powder, shorelines here are naturally shallow and lined with limestone or mangroves. Smathers Beach is topped with imported Bahamian sand; Fort Zachary Taylor has the clearest water but a coarse coral gravel bottom. The world-class turquoise water you see in photos is found on offshore sandbars and reefs, reached by boat.
2. The heat is a physical factor nine months of the year. Midday temperatures from May through October hover around 88°F to 92°F (31°C to 33°C) with 75%+ humidity and high UV index. Seasoned visitors split their days: active outdoor walks and bike rides from 7:30 AM to 11:00 AM, air-conditioned museums (Little White House, Butterfly Conservatory) or shaded pools from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and coastal breezes from 4:30 PM through sunset.
3. Driving inside Old Town is an expensive mistake. Streets laid out in the 1830s were designed for horse carts and sponge wagons, not modern SUVs. Parking meters charge $5.00/hour with strict 4-hour caps. Park your car at your hotel or the Old Town Park 'N' Ride garage on Grinnell Street ($32/day), hop on a cruiser bicycle, or ride the completely free Duval Loop bus.

Key West is one of the safest resort destinations in the United States with violent crime being exceedingly rare. The main visitor issues are bicycle thefts (always lock frames with a U-lock), sunburn/dehydration, and petty bar scuffles late at night along lower Duval Street. Local safety tips and emergency numbers.
Do not attempt street parking in residential zones marked in yellow paint, which carries an automatic $100 fine and towing. Use the municipal Park 'N' Ride garage at 300 Grinnell Street ($4/hr or $32/day) located immediately adjacent to Duval Loop bus Stop #1. Old Town garage maps and meter rules.
Yes, absolutely. The Yankee Freedom III ferry carries only 175 passengers once per day and routinely sells out 3 to 6 months in advance for peak winter and spring dates. Book your ferry seats the moment your travel dates are set. Ferry fares, booking tips, and seaplane options.
The City of Key West operates the Duval Loop, an air-conditioned hop-on hop-off bus that is 100% free with zero passes required. It runs every 15 minutes between 6:00 AM and midnight, stopping at Mallory Square, Truman Waterfront, and the Historic Seaport. Duval Loop stop map and bicycle rental guide.
A realistic budget averages $180-$240/day per person on a careful budget, $350-$480/day mid-range, and $650+/day for luxury stays. Hotel rooms represent the largest single line item, with peak winter rates starting around $300-$450/night in Old Town. Detailed itemized budgets and hidden resort fees.
November to April offers the finest weather: dry skies, comfortable daily highs between 74°F and 82°F (23°C to 28°C), and low humidity. Summer brings higher heat and hurricane season (June to November), though hotel prices drop significantly. Monthly weather charts and crowd calendar.
Yes, and for most visitors staying in Old Town, visiting without a car is vastly superior. The island is flat, compact, and completely walkable. The free Duval Loop bus covers 18 stops from the Historic Seaport to the Southernmost Point, cruiser bicycle rentals cost $15-$25/day, and ride-shares (Uber/Lyft) circulate constantly from Key West International Airport ($15-$20 fare into town).
The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is a private, family-owned historic property that has maintained a traditional cash-only admissions policy at its entry kiosk ($18 adult, $7 child) for decades to keep admissions queues moving quickly. ATMs are available inside the entry gate, but bringing exact cash saves time.
Key West is 160 miles (257 km) southwest of Miami via US-1 (the Overseas Highway). The drive takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic on the two-lane stretches. The drive crosses 42 overseas bridges, including the famous Seven Mile Bridge, and is widely regarded as one of America's most scenic road trips. Read our Miami to Key West driving guide for recommended stops.
For festive energy, street performers, and food carts, Mallory Square is the historic gathering point. For a quieter nature setting with unobstructed Atlantic horizons, head to the western jetty at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. For the ultimate experience away from land crowds, book a sunset catamaran cruise with open bar.
Yes, but only at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, where underwater limestone formations and coral heads 50 feet off the rocks attract yellowtail snappers, parrotfish, and rays. Other public beaches like Smathers and Higgs have sandy bottoms with minimal marine life. For living coral reef formations, you must take a boat 7 miles offshore on a barrier reef snorkeling trip.
On April 23, 1982, Key West mayor Dennis Wardlow ceremonially declared the city an independent nation called the 'Conch Republic' in protest of a US Border Patrol roadblock on US-1 that gridlocked travel into the Keys. The micro-nation 'surrendered' one minute later and demanded $1 billion in foreign aid. Today, the Conch Republic identity remains a symbol of Key West's eccentric, humorous independence, celebrated annually with the Conch Republic Days festival in April.
